About Us
Who we are
Hull Swahili Diaspora (HSD) is a constituted organisation that
was initiated in the spirit of Ubuntu, taking the African family
as a model for a wider kinship system. Ubuntu addresses people
interconnectedness, our common humanity, and our responsibility
to each other.
HSD was founded by members of main Swahili speaking countries
following the arrival of refugees from Congo, Somalia, and
Burundi. However, in alignment with our Ubuntu philosophy, our
aim is to bring communities together to tackle social and
economic issues together.
Our Aims
- To bring together people from the Swahili speaking background to create a platform for social integration in Hull and East Riding.
- To use Swahili language as a tool to promote our ancestors vision for African unity by setting a sample within Hull and East Yorkshire's African diaspora communities.
- To organise events to share and preserve our culture, celebrate identity and to promote racial harmony.
- Intergenerational dialogue, between the first and second generation of Swahili speaking through arts workshops, debates, and celebrating our national events.
- To promote education and cultural development.
